Our Worthiness

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light

1Peter 2:9

Some things are loved because they are worthy and some things are worthy because they are loved.

Dear friends, I believe like me, most of you have at times heard words of rejection or humiliation from those around us, may be from a teacher in school, or from your parents, spouse or colleague at work. At times we tend to believe what we hear and feel depressed and humiliated accepting ourselves to be what we heard. But this is not true.

Our worthiness does not come from who we are. All of us by ourselves are imperfect beings and not worthy to stand before our holy and righteous God.  However, God Almighty who created us, loves us and deemed us worthy enough to send His Son to die for our sins, to redeem us by His blood to be His sons and daughters forever.  We are children of the most high God and our worthiness comes from being accepted and loved by Him.

A real life incident I read comes to mind of a 10 year old child who had lots of dolls and toys in her possession, but her most beloved playmate was a ragged, broken down doll.  She never used to let it out of her sight. She would sleep at night with her arms around the doll cuddled beside her. During an emergency, when the family had to leave home urgently, they were asked to take only their most valuable possessions. When the child was asked what she wished to take, she had only one answer- her precious broken doll. The doll by itself was worthless and useless, but because it was dearly loved by the child, it became worthy and valuable.

In the same way, even though we are sinners and born with a tendency for doing evil works making us unworthy to stand before a righteous God, because He loves us, through His grace and mercy, each one of us is valuable and worthy in His sight.

Let us believe that we are precious in God's eyes, and accepted by Him in spite of all our imperfections. Let us feel valued and secure in His love, realizing that our worthiness comes from His love and does not depend on ourselves or on our acceptance from those around us.

Let us pray to God to help us live each day, drawing on His strength and comfort when we face humiliation, hurts or rejection from those near and dear to us. God alone knows the thoughts and reasons behind each hurtful thought and action.  When we pray, He will help us to control our thoughts, emotions and feelings so that they become a channel to pray for those who need healing spiritually and mentally. He alone can give counsel and comfort.

My friends, let us never forget that in God’s eyes we are:

Blessed, Chosen, Adopted, Beloved, Redeemed, Forgiven and Loved. We are God’s own possession.

Let us reaffirm the above to our selves whenever we feel unworthy or unloved..
